A large-eddy simulation study on the similarity between free vibrations of a flexible cylinder and forced vibrations of a rigid cylinder

The strip theory in hydrodynamics has been widely used for predicting complex vortex induced vibrations (VIV) behind bluff bodies, but the question of how accurate such predictions are not addressed adequately before. In order to corroborate application VIV, we present a comparative study between free mono-frequency long flexible cylinder both uniform and linearly sheared flow corresponding forced rigid with prescribed sinusoidal motions. We employ entropy–viscosity large-eddy simulation (LES) resolve vortical coupled response, which validate by companion experiments same configuration. then extract from LES, at Reynolds number, values sectional vibration amplitude, frequency, phase angle (between inline crossflow motions), use them as input parameters case, perform two-dimensional simulations. show here systematic studies that hydrodynamic coefficients exhibit strong similarities two cases, closely resembles near wake vibration.
